Q: Heel pain?
I just tried out for my school soccer team and aquired a pain in my heel (I beleive its plantar faciitis). I wanted to know if there was a really really fast way to heal it. I have practice tommorow and its the 1st one and I don’t want to disappoint the coach. I have already put pads in my cleats, I took an Aleve, and I got tape to wrap my foot in. Is there a way to get rid of the pain in a day?

A: there is no way to get rid of it in a day, keep taking anti inflammatories, and you could try contrast footbaths alternating cold and warm, which help with the imflammation, a steroid shot does work fast, but not that fast lol, look up low dye strapping on the net and try to strap your foot in the same way, its known as a rest strap and you can keep it on during your practice

Q: Heel Pain!?
I am a 14 year old boy and have some heel pain. After I played a basketball game about 3 days ago the pain started. It almost hurts to run, go up stairs, etc. Could this be heel spurs? It has never happened before and I’ve been playing basketball for over 5 years now.

Thanks
It also hurts when I put pressure on the sides of my heel.

A: my brother had the same thing. try going to a running sports store… they have heel pads that you can put in your shoes to make it more comfortable to run and stuff. but if the pain keeps up then you should see a doctor. worst case could be that you have a stress fracture in your foot, but i highly doubt that. don’t strain it, and be careful with it. don’t push yourself too hard.

Q: heel pain?
I have heel pain only in the left heel what causes this an how can i prevent this from happing

A: It could be Plantar Fasciitis. I had that a number of years ago on my right heel.
I got some Dr. Scholls heel pain inserts for my shoes that were specifically
for that. Also you can check The Mayo Clinic website. Type in Plantar Fasciitis
or click on diseases and treatments–on F and then get the info that you need.
Good luck and hope your heel feels better soon. I know how painful it is. You
can also go on Yahoo and type in heel pain and it will also give you information.

Q: If i have heel pain when i walk on the treadmil what should i do?
I started exercising regularly about three months ago. I have lost about 12 pounds, but i have some heel pain. Some days it is much worse than others. It is always the same foot. The pain usually goes away if i don’t exercise for a few days.

A: Hello,

From your description its very hard to tell the exact cause, but what comes to mind could be Plantar Fasciitis.

If you can answer these question I will be able to give you a better answer:

1) Do you see any redness on your heel?
2) Where exactly does it hurt?
3) Does it hurt more after you rest or sleep?
4) Is it sensitive to the touch?
5) Does it also hurt when you are not walking?
6) Do you have high or low arches?
7) What kind of shoes you usually wear?

For now I would suggest normal treatment which involves stretching and icing at least 4 times a day.

You should also wear good supportive shoes with good arch supports.

If you have to exercise I suggest you do low impact activities such as cycling or swimming.

If it still doesn’t go away after a few more days then I suggest you make an appointment with a Podiatrist.

You can write to me directly if you prefer at itaiw@yahoo.com

Feel better and Good luck!

Q: Heel PAIN!!!?
yesterday, I jump out of the swimming pool and landed on a concrete block ( hit the very back of my heel on the coner of the block) I can walk on it a little, little swelling, little purple in color, Did I just bruse it?

A: Hopefully you just bruised it. Keep it elevated and iced.

Q: How do you deal with heel pain?
I have an arched foot, and I tend to get a pain in the back of my heel while doing more strenous exercises. Heel cups don’t work all that well, and I can’t wear them while exercising. I keep my foot in an Ace bandage while I’m not moving around. What do you recommend, other than keeping my foot elevated?

A: Go and see a Podiatrist and get the problem sorted with professional help. Remember, your feet have the weight of your body for the rest of your life, so messing around with them now, could mean serious ankle, knee, hip, spine problems later in life.

Q: How can I get relief from heel pain?
I have been experiencing heel pain in both my feet for the past 6 weeks. I used to run regularly, but since the pain started I switched to bike riding to lessen the pounding on my feet, but I still have pain. I’ve also tried different footwear and insoles without much success. When I wake up in the morning my feet and ankles feel sore and tight, particularly in the achilles tendon area. Any ideas?

A: check out plantar faciatis (sp?)

Q: Recommendations for best insoles for reducing heel impact pain due to exercise? Please?
I’m very overweight and trying to work to lose it. I have a treadmill but due to my size, the repeated workouts is giving me noticeable heel pain due to the heel strikes on the treadmill. I cannot currently afford to buy a gym membership, a new piece of low-impact equipment or even a really nice pair of high-tech shoes (like shox or 360s). I don’t want to overdo and get my feet in such awful shape that I cannot continue the exercise. Please respond with suggestions for the thickest or best insoles or heelcups that might help me reduce the pain/injury factor. Thanks so much.
I don’t think its plantar fascitis…YET. Hoping to be proactive and avoid the problem if I can. I *think* that if I can find something really effective to cushion the impact until I lose some of the weight and/or can afford to buy a decent elliptical then I can continue with my goal of attaining a tolerable weight without too much foot pain. Thank you for your reply. :)

A: Are you sure your heel pain isnt plantar fasciaitis? Caused by the muscle being pulled away from the bones of your foot by a stronger calf muscle.

I am a 250 lb guy who had significant heel / arch pain. I went to a foot doctor who made orthotics. They cost me $300 dollars but the results are phenomenal. No pain within days of wearing them in all shoes.

Q: How to deal with my heel pain?
I have had heel pain occuring in my left heel for the past 4-6 weeks. Ive switched shoes, rested my leg, iced my heel, switched soles in my shoes, and taken medicine for it. Nothing seems to be working as the pain still occurs and gets worse when I have to walk to class. Any idea on what this pain could be and would it be advisable to get crutches and/or an Aircast boot to help with this pain seeing as it would keep weight off of the foot for a few weeks?

A: That pain is happening because your achilles tendon has tightened up making the muscle for your leg shorter than it should be and makes it pull on the end with the least amount of resistance to it, where it’s attached to your heel. To get rid of the pain you have to free up the tendon so the muscle gets back to it’s normal length and here’s how to do that:
Achilles tendon:
While sitting and your leg on your lap, take both thumbs and place them side by side at about ankle height on the tendon on the back of your leg and apply pressure hard and hold. After 30 seconds slowly raise your toes up as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your foot there for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Q: How do you deal with heel pain from bone spurs?
Its been a while since I went to the dr. for it but my right heel hurts bad. more in the evening than day time and while just sitting still it throbs. How can I aleviate this pain with out heavy pain meds?

A: If you have not been to a podiatrist, you should go. They are great and can offer many treatments. Plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) always returns. One effective thing you can do is stretch the sole of your foot before rising from a bed or chair. Stretch your legs out in front of you and keep them there. Bring your toes toward your head as hard as you can and hold several seconds. Repeat several times. Also, wearing shoes with high, rounded arches helps a GREAT DEAL. Cherokee Rockers are the best. you can do a web search..many places sell many styles of them. Also some local stores may have them, especially Famous Footwear. I am a nurse and wore them for years with great results. Also, do not go barefooted in the house…wear shoes with good support.

Q: How do you get rid of Heel Pain?
My feet have started to hurt. I bought pads for my shoes and occasionally ice but my feet haven’t improved. Has anyone ever had heel pain and found a cure?

A: Im 11 had that pain a lot dont worry rest somewhere have an ice pack put your foot up leave it then but a heat pack or some thing warm rest it on it for a while try walking if it still hurts rest on it for a while and do the heat pack ice pack thing for a longer amount of time then the first time.

if it still hurts maybe go see a doctor if it stays for a while or dont do much walking or running depending on your lifestyle

Q: what is the reason for my severe heel pain and burning sensation on my foot?
I m having severe heel pain for that past 3 months. Especially in the early morning. what is the reason for this and how do i treat this.

A: well if it is like the bone.. you could have bruised or cracked the heel bone in your foot.. that is a tough one tho.. that is all i can really think of.. i know i rolled my ankle once and then the heel hurt so bad but not for that long and the burning sensation followed with mine too.. go to the doctors and get it checked out.. they will do a couple tests but its worth it to get that better

Q: How do i stop heel pain without going to the doctor?
I don’t wear high heel cause i have osteoarthritis in both knees. Can that be causing my pain in my foot also????

A: Hello,

From your description it is hard to tell exactly why your heel hurts – it could be “Plantar Fasciitis” (Inflammation of the fascia at the bottom of the foot) Or just a bruise.

If you can answer these questions I will be able to give you a better diagnosis and a possible treatment:

1) Does it also hurt when you are not walking/standing?
2) Is there any redness or swelling visible?
3) Is it sensitive to the touch?
4) Do you have high or low arches in your feet?
5) What kind of shoes you usually wear?
6) Do you have more pain after a night sleep (waking in the morning)?
7) Where exactly is the pain located in your heel?
8) Is it painful in both feet?

What you should do for now is ice your heel at least 4 times a day.
You should also try and avoid walking barefoot around the house – wearing shoes with orthotics can help.
If gel inserts don’t provide relief then you should consider having custom made orthotics to wear in your shoes.

I also advise you to stretch your legs and feet before getting out of bed in the morning and after sitting down for a long period of time.

Again, if you can answer my questions above I will be able to help you further.

You can write to me directly if you prefer, my email is in my profile.

Good luck and feel better!

Q: Heel pain: does it sound like a heel spur or plantar fasciitis?
My left heel has been hurting me for several months now. It progressed very slowly from something annoying to something that is almost crippling. It is the worst in the morning when I get out of bed, I can hardly walk and almost fall down from the pain, but the more I walk the better it feels. Even during the day if I sit for 5 mins then walk the pain the back. The pain has gotten much worse and I am going to the doctor next week. Does this sound like a heel spur or plantar fasciitis?

A: Plantar fascitis comes 1st then you get a heel spur. I imagine you have fascitis. Before you get out of bed in the morning, do calf stretches for a couple minutes before you get out of bed. It will help.

Q: Is there any way to get rid of heel pain?
What causes heel pain and can one recover from this? I have extreme heel pain while walking after lying down or sitting. Sometimes the pain goes away or is just less but still present while I walk. It is really painful, even while sitting when I lift up my feet bring my heels up.

A: I can’t diagnose, of course, but it sounds a lot like plantar fasciitis

Webmd says it ” is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue (ligament) that connects your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot. If you strain your plantar fascia, it gets weak, swollen, and irritated (inflamed). Then your heel or the bottom of your foot hurts when you stand or walk. “

It’s normally worse when you first get up from sleeping. Put on your shoes (preferably athletic shoes) when you first get out of bed. Take ibuoprophen or aspirin (not Tylenol) if you are able. And, you have to let the foot rest (sort of hard to do; humans tend to walk), and there are good exercises for it. Try icing it also.

I can’t take ibuprophen so I ended up getting special inserts that I have to wear all the time. See the source below; it’s very thorough (of course see a dr first for a real diagnosis)
