Q: Nerve Pain . . . . . . . . . . .?
Herpetic Neuralgia, are their any treatments for the nerve pain that accompanies herpes?
Thank you for your input, founddog.
Hey Zach, good to know your up to getting herpes in your mouth, on your tongue and in your throat. Good luck with that ; )

A: Herpes taste REALLY good. Mmmmmmm

Q: nerve pain?
About a year and half ago I had two herniated discs in my low back (really at the top of my butt) and the chiro worked for a little while and then I stopped going and it got better, tolerable. However, nerve pain and numbness has not gone away. As I’m writing this I’m having dull, numbing, slight pain running through my left leg. The bottom of my foot and toes are tingly and thick feeling. Someone said it may be the nerves running through my pelvis are to swollen in the holes and are being constricted. Could this be? Or what do you think?

A: “having dull, numbing, slight pain running through my left leg. The bottom of my foot and toes are tingly and thick feeling”

These are symptoms of irritated sciatic nerve, which starts at the lower back and extends through your buttock down your leg.

Whether the cause of the nerve irritation is herniated disc, degenerative disc disease or other needs to be determined by a specialists. It is done based on the examination, medical history and MRI.

Hope this was helpful.

Q: Nerve pain?
I’ll be relaxing, and all of a sudden a sharp nerve pain hits my hand on my right side, and sometimes my hand on the left side. It’s like my nerves are going crazy. As anyone ever dealt with this, and what could it be?

A: Could be corpal tunnel in the hands. It is very common with people who use their hands everyday for their jobs, lifting, typing ect. I would get it checked out if i was you because it can get worse and there are options out there to fix it ( wrist splints, operation to loosen the nerves, medicine ect ). Soak your hands and wrists in warm to hot ( as much as you can tolerate ) for a few minutes and see if that helps. Good luck.

Q: What causes nerve pain on top side of the head?
It’s been 3 months that I have a slight pain on both sides of the head 3 inches above my ears, and top part of the head is very sensitive. The pain is manageable, seems like a nerve pain, and not inside my head. Been going to neurologist, ENT, chiro and internist, and they are baffled. There isn’t a day that I don’t feel any pain. I’ve been searching the website for clues about this symptoms, but no luck. Please help! I’m 32yo male and active in sports.

A: There are sutures in the skull which have membranes lining the joints..Whenever there is tenderness, it indicates there is torsion of the skull.. you can verify this just by pressing at the base of the skull and see how tender it is on one side. Why your chiropractor was unable to make this determination suggests he was asleep in class.. find another one but, call and discuss the problem on the phone and see if they understand what the problem is.

In order to have this problem, you would necessarily need to have some postural discrepancy evident. This problem progressed would eventually involve the jaw joint. Is common in TMJ.

Q: How to get rid of nerve pain in the hand and arm?
Sometimes I have a sharp pain on the back of my left hand, and my wrist. I know its not a muscle pain, so its has to be the nerves in there. I was thinking I might need to take some vitamin b complex for to help my nerve system. Is there any better way to get rid of this pain?

A: Depending on what side the pain is on, it could be CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) in which case you would need to stop doing redundant activities with your left hand unless you want surgery later on when it becomes irreversible. Now remember, this is only if you would per se do the same thing for hours every day or something like that.

now this is only if the pain is around the thumb. Even then, it might now be. Most likely it is just a pinched nerve, and if you just stop putting stress and using the left hand/arm as much, then it should feel better in a couple of days to a week. (:

Q: How does slamming a car door on one hand cause nerve pain in the other hand?
ER doctor said the fingers were only bruised, not broken, but that was 2 weeks ago and the pain is still really bad. Is the nerve pain in the other hand caused from overuse due to having to baby the sore hand?

A: no

Q: How can i get relief for nerve pain, maybe some kind of home remedity?
I have a knot in a muscle in my left shoulder, causing nerve pain to shoot down my arm, and now it hurts so bad I can’t even massage it .
Iv’e been to the doctors, going on four months now. i got a cortizone shot which 3 weeks ago, which easied the pain, and went for an mri last week , they still can’t do anything for me. it hurts so bad now. i.m just looking for something that could ease the pain somewhat. shots , therapy doesn’t work. Some massage tecnique, a gel, or rub. honey, magnet, anything. Please help!!

A: have you tried a muscle relaxer such as zanaflex? also moist heat 3 to 4 time a day helps loosen the muscle. I get knots in my neck and back due to fibromyalgia. They get very big and hurt so much sometimes I can’t move my head. I get injections of lidocaine and a steroid in the knots about every 6 weeks it is a tempory fix but helps quite a bit. It usually helps the pain for about 4 to 41/2 weeks.

Q: How can you relieve a pinched nerve pain in your hip while pregnant?
My hip hurts so bad and pain into my leg, where it feels as though my leg is going to give out while I walk. I imagine it’s that wonderful sciatic nerve! Anyway, I’m calling the DR tomorrow, but want to know if anyone has had any luck relieving some or all of the pain at home. I want the pain to stop now! I am pregnant so meds are out of the question, except Tylenol, which is useless.

A: There isn’t a lot you can do now, but it’s good to get chiropractic adjustments during your pregnancy as all the joints need to loosen and stretch during this time, and can cause some pinched nerves. Talk with your doctor about it.

Q: Any suggestions for sciatic nerve pain other than a chiropractor?
I am 24 weeks pregnant and having sciatic nerve pain. I had it with my first pregnancy as well and know how much worse its going to get! I need some at-home type remedies, as I just can’t afford to see a chiropractor.

A: I had horrible sciatica when I was pregnant with my daughter. While seeing a chiropractor for sciatica may have helped some people, it made mine many times worse than it was. I would say… be glad you can’t afford a chiropractor! Since sciatica is nerve pain and not muscle, I don’t see how anyone could get any relief that way. (I do swear by my chiropactor for other aches and pains, though!)

I honestly only got relief for good once I delivered the baby. I tried different sleeping positions, sitting positions, walking in a different way. Nothing gave me any consistent relief. Sleeping was a bit easier when I slept with a pillow between my knees (with the knees separated a bit, the nerve wasn’t pulled as much when I was sleeping).

I was told by my OB (and my mother-in-law, otherwise known as “she who knows all”) that nothing but delivery would really help the pain.

Be glad you didn’t have it start until now! Mine started this time around at about 12 weeks!

Good luck.

Q: Is there something you can do to relieve sciatica nerve pain?
I am going to a pain managment clinic. They are going to burn the nerve to me some relief for a bit. Is there something I can do to help with this problem. Something like some kind of exercise or something?

A: Definitely, I suggest a licensed chiropractor and massage therapist combo (ask your regular dr. for a referral and some insurances plans will cover it).
Also, the hip rotators, gluteals and thigh mucles should be stretched on a daily basis, with breathing excercizes too. I don’t recommend holding yoga positions for so long if you think to try it get a video designed for sciatic pain.

Good luck,
Mariah

Q: Is there any kind of Herbal or Natural pain medicine for Diabetic Nerve Pain?
My Mom has Diabetic Nerve Pain in her feet due to trauma and slight injury from stepping barefooted on small hard objects. She is a heart patient and a lot of the pain drugs prov en to help stop the pain she is not allowed to take! Are there any natural or herbal treatments that anyone knows of?

A: Capsaicin puts the heat in hot peppers. It manipulates the body’s pain status by hindering pain perception, triggering the release of pain-relieving endorphins and providing analgesic action. Commercial capsaicin-containing creams such as Zostrix, Heet and Capzasin-P are used topically for arthritic and nerve pain. Creams containing .025 percent capsaicin can significantly reduce osteoarthritic pain when applied to joints four times daily. A higher concentration of .075 percent works best for peripheral nerve pain — such as that from diabetic nerve damage, HIV and pain following cancer surgery. When using topical capsaicin products, be sure to avoid touching your eyes and other sensitive areas.

Q: Should i go to the doctor for my sciatic nerve pain?
Is there a cure for the pain on my lower back? When i run my right leg becomes numb. I know it has to do with my sciatic nerve. What should i do?

A: First of all, you DO know that you have sciatic nerve pain from your back!!!!! That is why your leg becomes numb, it has to do with your spinal cord……….i know all this cause i have severe scoliosis and degenerative joint disease….Last yr. i had to 2 major back surgeries and they finally ended up fusing my lumber (lower back). My legs still hurt bad mainly at night. So i am on some pretty heavy pain pills Fentynal patch and vicodin for breakthrough pain. I was doing physical therapy for my back when my hip starting killing me and my knee blew up so i went to this ortho Dr and said i had to have a total hip replacement!!!!!!!!!! So 2 weeks ago i had knee surgery…it was minor day survey….i had to have this done cause i can’t do rehab on my hip with a bum knee!!! OH! A chiropractor will not TOUCH me cause of the lumber surgery!!!! I recommend you go to a specialist….a spine surgeon ASAP. The longer you wait the worst it will get! And also to a Pain Specialist or Pain Clinic!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you start to feel better soon….oh! and you can have sciatic pain can be in both legs…..and i KNOW how bad it hurts so GOOD luck and get well soon.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: Anyone with suggestions for Siatic nerve pain in pregnancy?
I am 37 weeks pregnant and my baby has placed himself nicely on my siatic nerve causing the worst pain ever! He has been laying on it for the last 2 weeks and the pain is just getting worse and worse to the point I limp when I walk. My OB suggested Physical therapy but by the time I could get into one it will about time to deliver. Does anyone have any home remedies or suggestions to make the pain lighten up a little atleast??

A: That happened to me too. I use one of those icy-hot patch type which gave me temporary relief….I had the extra strength one that lasted 6 hrs I think.

Q: How to relieve exposed nerve pain in canine teeth?
i grind my teeth at night and own a very durable mouth guard but recently have been forgetting to wear it while sleeping. In the last few day I have managed to grind all my canine teeth down to a point where breathing air in through my teeth is VERY painful. I can’t chew food comfortably. I was just wondering if there was a way to relieve the pain? I’m not entirly sure if the nerve is showing but it hurts something god aweful. any advice would be great.

A: I doubt that your nerve is exposed just by forgetting to wear your night guard for a few nights. However, you are “knocking around” that canine a whole lot when you don’t wear it. It’s probably just traumatized and it would be sensitive to temperature changes and eating.

best bet: USE YOUR NIGHT GUARD! and try some sensitive type toothpastes for awhile. You can also take a couple of anti-inflamatories like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. You should see an improvement in 4-7 days.

warning: it has been seen that severe grinding can affect and traumatize the nerves inside the teeth to where it will start to die. in that case, you will experience pain that does not go away for months and you will need root canal therapy.

note: do not take an antibiotic unless you have been diagnosed with an infection. (every time you take an antibiotic, you lessen the ability of your own body to combat future infections, and running the risk of making stronger and stronger bacteria.)

Q: Is sciatic nerve pain in the butt during pregnancy a sign of the sex of the baby?
I was told by a friend that women who experience sciatic nerve pain that is felt in the butt is typically a sign that the baby is a boy. Does this seem to be true or a wrong assumption? I haven’t read anything that backs it up.

A: Wow. Definitely not. The only way to tell the sex is through ultra sound
