Q: constant chest/rib pain???costochondritis??
ive had this almost moving chest pain for a few months. it seems to be muscular because it hurts most when i press on my ribs or into my boobs. right now the pain is in the upper right area and in my lower left boob(again more rib pain when i press here) ive had blood work, ecg, xrays, and was at the doc 2 weeks ago, at that point the pain was fully under my left boob, and she said it was a pulled muscle. i havent lifted anything heavy since n why would the pain move if it was a pulled muscle. for the most part it is just uncomfortable, but hurts when pressure is applied, and is quite constant. im not too worried about my heart as it doesnt increase if i extert myself..just wondering does this sound like costochondritis to anyone who has it?? i would really appreciate any help
thank you for your answers…in response to the first lady its not that it doesnt hurt when i dont press on it, its just that it hurts more when i do. i just wanna thank you again, sometimes just getting reassurance makes you feel a lot more secure(i have anxiety issues as well which makes this worse sometimes) thanks again
A: Hiya
I have been going though the exact same thing for the last 6 months. I had a rib out of place on top of everything else…something you might want to get checked out because it didn’t show up on the multiple x-rays that I had. I got a lot better when that was taken care of but I just started a new job and am at a new desk and a new chair so the costocondritis is flareing again. The only advice I can give is wait and prolly get a script for the anxiety (sorry, at work and spelling sucks) because the thing that sucks the most about this condition is the fact that nothing can be done besides treat the symptoms and I know I started to freak out because its taking so long to heal. but bottom line is it sounds exactly like costocondritis…email anytime if you wanna complain! enchanted_mydnight@yahoo.com
Q: Why do I get chest/rib pain when I exercise?
When I was young I was quite good at most sports and particularly long distance running. I did a lot of sports including horse riding, competition aerobics, badminton and netball.
When I was about 14 I began to get chest pains when I exercised. They still occur and I am now 18. The pain is like a constrictive tight pain. Sometimes it is on both sides of my rib cage just below my sternum, other times my sternum (sp?) hurts. If I breathe very shallowly it does not hurt at all. I have never had asthma before and I had chest x-rays but there were no irregularities or anything.
Why does this happen and how can I make it stop?
A: i get this too and i’m quite an athletic person as well. i think its because of the lungs, some sort of a fluid build up, and your lungs cant get rid of it. i think its best to see a doctor, but mine usually happen when i bench press and then go out in cold weather without wearing properly. so keep you chest warm and wear properly. also, make sure your room has a good temperature and its not humid.
Q: Rib/chest pain while/after running?
Is this normal. I’ve been excersizing and it’s not like this is the first year of running or anything. I’ve been running in gym all the time ya know? But for the past year in a half I always get this horrible rib pain right below my chest and it always slows me down because it hurts so much. It usually stops after 20minutes of not running. What’s wrong with me? I’m drinking enough water.
Age:16
Gender:female
Height: 5ft 4.5inches
Weight:112lbs
fat %: 22
What’s going on?
Water amount: 1gallon at least and not all at once.
I do deep breathing and the doctor already checked my blood pressure and everything a month ago.
This always happens like 5minutes of running. I have gym for two quarters of every year in Highschool that it’s been happening.
A: You’re not breathing right, you need to take DEEP breaths while you’re running. I know this because my brother is in the Coast Guard and that (the deep inhalation, breathing) stopped my side chest pains.
Q: Chest Pain, Rib Pain?
About nine days ago, I woke up with really bad back/rib pain and I went to the ER. They did an X-Ray and said they didn’t find anything, so just told me to rest and take ibuprofen. A week later, the back pain has diminished a decent amount, but I am constantly having pain in my chest on the left side, causing sometimes 5 minute prolonged pain in my heart, and on the right side of my chest, causing my lung to hurt as well, sometimes from breathing too deeply or from nothing at all.
I also feel some acute pain in my left and right ribs right in these areas. The X-Ray found nothing and the doctor I went to says I just need rest, but I feel the pain is only continuing. I have no insurance, so I am paying for every visit out of pocket, so I was wondering if anyone had any idea what could be going on? I am feeling pretty hopeless right now. Thanks to all in advance for any help.
A: If you have shortness of breath, I would be worried about it and go back to the ER. But if you don’t, then try and relax and wait it out. Take 800 mgs. of ibuprofen (prescription strength) Have you done anything strenuous that would cause a pulled muscle?
I have also had collapsed lungs and the drs don’t always pick it up on the xray. One way to tell for sure is to stand up and then bend over at the waist like you are touching your toes. Then stand back up straight. If you feel ANYTHING in your upper chest move (like a bubble, for example) you have a collapsed lung. If you don’t feel anything, you are ok. This works everytime. Good luck.

A: It sounds like a muscle strain/pull. I have had it happen to me before just by turning my neck wrong. I was prescribed muscle relaxers and ibuprofen and it went away after a few days. I tried to ignore it for about a week before I broke down and went to see my physician.
No “quick fix” I’m afraid.
Q: Does anybody know the cause of my chest/rib pain?
It hurts in the middle of my left side of my chest, right above where my chest becomes the breast, and the left side of my ribs hurt all the way down to the last one. I wouldn’t say one hurts more than the other, they just throb at different times. I used to get this pain a couple times a month, but within the past couple weeks it’s hurt more than a few times. I’m going to the doctor tomorrow anyway for something unrelated, but It’s killing me now. Just wanted an opinion.
A: Do you think it’s indigestion or gas? Gas in the body can cause some weird pains sometimes. It has happened to me before.
Q: front rib pain, chest pain, arm and shoulder pain…costochondritis/tietze syndrome?
One morning I woke up and i had severe chest pain and it radiated down my right arm and was also in my shoulder…i went and had my BP taken by an emt and they told me they didn’t think i was having heart problems because my BP was normal. The last year or so the front of my ribs on both sides have been tender to the touch and the pain is worsened by activity. I went to the doctor and they believed my T4 rib was locking up so I have been to the chiropractor 5 times and have been adjusted. The pain hurts almost constantly but worse with activity. My arm hurts like i have muscle fatigue and my shoulder shoulder hurts. i have some random chest pains during certain activity and pain increases when i take deep breaths. do you think this could be costochondritis/tietze syndrome?
A: If you have had any respiratory infections or chest trauma, especially surgery, you are very vulnerable to costochondritis. IV drug use also makes you more susceptible. Normally, however, it resolves itself, and a case should not last a year, unless you have infectious (as opposed to non-infectious) costochondritis. Ask if your insurance company covers a gallium scan, if you do not react to reduced activity and NSAID therapy. If there is no swelling, and is affecting your 4th or 5th ribs, it is more likely than not costochondritis. Bear in mind that if it is infectious and does not respond to antibiotics and NSAID therapy, you may require steroid shots, IV antibiotics, and if that fails, surgical repair/removal of the affected tissue.
I doubt it is Tietze syndrome as it is a very rare disorder, and most likely not the cause of your pain. It more commonly affects the 2nd and 3rd ribs at the cartilage, and not the lower ribs. If you have localized swelling where the pain is (around the sternum) you very well may be looking at Tietze, and discuss the possibility with your doctor. Keep in mind that it is very rare and is usually resolved on its own.
Q: For about a year now, ever since my mom passed away, i have gotten sharp chest pain, rib pain and back pain.?
The doctor has given me 3 ekg’s, and chest x-rays, and they all were normal-this pain comes and gos and i cant really find a trigger other than stress-lately ive gotten sudden warmness or cold sensations through out my body-ive taken stress meds and anxiety pills, but they dont help-does anyone even know what this sounds like?ive also been diagnosed with acid reflux.
A: It sounds like they already ruled out any heart abnormalities with the ekgs and chest xray, sort of, but you should really have a STRESS TEST–that is a medical test where they have you walk briskly on a treadmill while they monitor your heart-with blood pressure, ekg rhythm strips and pulse monitor. Then they inject a drug into your system and take pictures of your heart–the difference between having this stress test and you just having regular EKG’s, is that the stress test actually shows how your heart is reacting to STRESS- in the form of exercise. The doctor will bring your heart rate up to it’s maximum capacity–which is based on your age, and then the pictures will show how your heart is reacting to it.
My condolences on the loss of your mom–that is both physical and mental stress on you, and you really should have an exercise stress test to really rule out any heart abnormalities that could be causing your symptoms. If the stress is completely normal–then I suggest you see a good internist and have them do a thorough work up on you–blood tests to make sure nothing else is going on. Sometimes a severe trauma, like the loss of a loved one, triggers an illness to surface which you already had but the symptoms were not progressed yet. Stress triggers a multitude of physical problems and prolonged stress is the worst.
Good luck to you — I hope everything works out and turns out okay. If you check out completely physically, then you at least know there isn’t anything serious going on with you.
A lot of people won’t do this, but it really will help you–is to see a psychologist regarding your loss. Mental stress can cause physical pain as well, but like I said above, make sure everything REALLY IS okay physically first……..

A: This has to be a joke.
First, 2 weeks is too early to find out.
Second, she can’t be showing so early!
Q: I have been having chest pain and pain near rib area. What should i do?
Usually the pain is sharp and could last a couple of minutes. If i move with the pain, it gets worse.
A: Any type of chest pain should Not be ignored…. you can have a heart attack at any time. If you are 30 or older I would definately go to the Emergency Room. Younger I might wait alittle while to see if it subsided but if not you need to go too…
It could also be bad indigestion, Take a couple of tums or rolaids. If it gets better thats good if not, again go to the Doc…
It could also be a Virus that you have picked up from some where. You might have a stomach ulcer, which also needs med. attention. hope you are better real soon!
Q: chest and rib pain any body know what it might be besides stress?
why do i get sharp pains in mostly my ribs but also in my chest? the doctors say its stress but i think its something else any idea what it might be?
A: hi, yeh i kinda have the same problem, my doctor said that its your ribs pinching your lungs or something. its not dangerous or anything it just occationally hurts. either that or your having heart problems.
Q: chest/rib pain while running?
last night after running I got a horrible pain in my chest/rib area, I felt (for lack of a better word) tingly and my vision went a little blurry. I almost panicked and called 911 until I threw up and felt fine? I have had this feeling before (minus the vomiting and less severe) My question is… what is causing this pain and how can I avoid it in the future? I would like to know what is going on with my body when this happens? Thanks!!!
A: sounds to me like you need to see a doctor.
Q: I took water pills and now i’ve been having chest/rib pain?
i was bloated on my period so i took water pills for 5 days (1 a day) since then, i have been having aching, almost like a sore feeling, in my rib area and sometimes a little higher. (not heart though) sometimes my head/back of my neck hurt as well. i know i only took 5 pills, but i’m afraid it may have caused something. it may not be the pills at all though…it could just be a weird coincidence. thoughts on this?
A: Periods can be weird like that, don’t blame the pills.
Just get some more rest and you should be fine.
Q: what does it mean when i breathe in i have a chest pain and my rib hurts when i lift my hand ?
i’ve been sick with the stomach flu for three days so i’ve been sleeping nonstop, and this morning i woke up with a pain where when i laugh it hurts and when i breathe in also. so also my back and my left rib has been aching could this be for sleeping to much ? not enough excercise ?
A: Those are signs of pinched muscles in your back. When pinched in the rib area they get more pressure on them when you breath because of your ribs moving outward which pinches them more. It is probably in your back where you feel the pain. You do have to release the muscles to get rid of the pain. Here’s how to release them:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
Q: rib/chest pain.. what is this?
i have had a cough for 3 weeks now. the worst cough i have ever had. it will be in spells of over 10 coughs and its hard to breathe. last night i had a huge “cough attack” and it hurt badly. this morning i woke up had to cough. when i did this pain on the side of my upper rib cage hurt so bad i had to hold in my coughs (which is hard). the pain is like a stabbing pain it goes from right above my hips to right below my bust. any idea what this is? when i cough in the 10+ spells, at the end it makes this weird noise and i start gagging. idk what this is.
could it be whooping cough?
A: It can be a muscle pain due to the excessive coughing. But talking to a doctor is not a bad idea.
