Q: Is it normal to have foot pain 4 days post Marathon?
I ran my first Marathon on Sunday and I Still have foot pain only when I walk. The longer I walk on it the more painful it gets. I went to see a Podiatrist yesterday and there is no Stress Fracture according the the X-ray. He said he thinks it’s a pulled muscle, but I don’t know it sure gets pretty painful and isn’t getting any better. I try to rest as much as possible and Ice and Elevate. Is this normal????
The Pain is by my 5th Metatarsal.

A: I had pain similar to that while training for my first marathon. It turned out to be a muscle strain that ran along the side of my foot and up to the rear of my ankle. My physiotherapist had me use heat to loosen up the muscle and told me to do a bunch of balance exercises that strengthened the sides of my feet. It hurt for about 2 weeks, then after doing the heat and exercises I felt better in a week or so. Never had that issue again.
I hope your issue is as easily fixed.

Q: Why my foot pain when i shuffling at anywhere?
My shoes brand is Adidas and i use the correct way to dance but my foot keep on pain….Is the problem caused by the shoes ? Would me get the foot pain when i was old?

A: WHAT?!

Q: Sharp, extreme pain in foot often when i lie down. What is it caused by and how to stop the PAIN?
Its usually just in my right foot. Pain is in the arch of foot.
Someone please help!
No my feet are not flat, they probally have more arch then normal.

A: It could be plantar fasctis. Do you have flat feet?

Q: Why do I get terrible foot pain when I lay down only?
I thought when you put your foot up at rest, its supposed to relief the pain and its all the contrary for me, I have to get up. The pain is from my ankle all the way to my toes.

A: Sounds like you have either plantar fasciitis or a foot cramp.

Try some stretches (very gradual). Pull your toes up towards your knee as far as you are able, then relax and repeat.

Q: What’s the most effective way to conquer foot pain?
My mom has had severe foot pain for the last year, it get’s so debilitating that she can’t walk at times. She has been seeing a podiatrist, who referred her to physical therapy, which she has been going to and following through on, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. I told her that it may get worse before it get’s better. I know that losing weight would help her immensly, but other than that, I’m not really sure. I know what helps me with my feet is when I (or my husband) squeeze my heel pretty hard for about 10 seconds, and then let go and massage the area, and when I stick my fingers in between my toes and spread them apart, and I have told my mom that but she is to afraid to try it, I have been trying to find a website to support my theory, but have had no success. Any suggestions would be appreciated!! Oh yeah, she has heel spurs.

A: Massage is absolutely the best thing that can be done to relieve foot pain. Your idea is spot on. have your mother soak her feet in hot water with 1c. of Epsom salts which will help relieve the pain. And afterwards massage the feet using an analgesic cream. If she does this every evening she will start to get pain relief. I hope this gives you the support you needed for your theory.

Q: is it good to go running when suffering of foot pain?
so for the past years i have been suffering with lots of foot pain/arch pain… but i love running… is it a good idea to go running when my foot/arch are in pain?

A: I would say it just depends. I’ve run on many nagging injuries myself. I used to believe if I did not run everyday, then I would lose some of my endurance.

As I’ve gotten older and more experienced then I have learned that sometimes your body just needs the rest. Try walking or cross training (swimming, cycling, etc…) I believe doing things like this will keep your body fresher and hopefully injury free. Hope this helps.

Also you might have planter fasciitis if its the bottom of your foot. You would have to look into that though

Q: Is this foot pain associated with my hypothyroidism?
I have hypothyroidism and experience a lot of foot and lower back pain. Is this associated with the disease?

A: I have never heard of back and foot pain associated with hypothyroidism. I know I do not have it. Maybe you should check with the doctor.

Q: What is the cause of my top of foot pain?
I have had this on and off foot pain for 2 weeks. The pain is there every morning, when I wake up and sometimes will continue throughout the day.
I do not have the pain will resting my foot but it will happen while walking.
The pain is located by my first and second toes, stretching up through the the top of my foot.
What could this possibly be?
What can or should I do?

A: sesimoiditis…inflammation in the joints of the foot I believe. You can try actipatch to treat the inflammation, take anti-inflammatory meds, ice it and if it doesn’t get any better see a podiatrist

Q: What could be causing my foot pain, hand pain, and dizzy spells?
Since May 2009 I have been suffering with extreme heel pain in my right foot which seems to originate from the backside of my leg. Today, a new problem has cropped up in the form of pain in my right hand (thumb, joint of my right thumb, and index finger). Also, for the last 2 weeks I have been experiencing intermittent dizzy spells, where the world jumps up and down and I feel like I’m going to loose consciousness. What could be causing all of this? I would appreciate input.

A: Your foot pain can be released this way:
Pull that foot up into your lap. Take both hands and keep them about one inch apart for this. Place them at the bottom of your leg so that they can grab the tendon of the big muscle between fingers and thumb. Press down hard on the tendons and hold.
Now relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’ tense up any part of your body.
After 30 seconds pull your toes up as far as they will go and hold. Remove the pressure but hold your body there for one minute more.
Then you must be having headaches to go along with the pain you are experiencing.
To get rid of that pain do the following. Take your hand and place it by your head so that you can shove your thumb in under your ear unto the muscle there. Then wrap your fingers around the back of the muscle group and pull them together and hold tightly.
Relax again. When the muscle releases it will go limp in your hand, keep moving your hand so the first half of the muscles are released. Then do the same on the other side. If you continue to have any other pains let me know and I will help with them.

Q: I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago because of foot pain, still hurts?
I have pain in the outside of my foot as well as the top of my foot. I now have some pain in the outside of my ankle as well. I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago and they did x-rays but found nothing, the pain has gotten worse, I am wondering if I should go back to the doctor? The pain is pretty bad right now. Thanks.

A: Well, obviously, your doctor was wrong. You should go back and tell him/her whats been up. Tell him/her that you think something is seriously wrong and the pain is rapidly getting worse. They should give you another chance for the x-rays. IF they say nothing is wrong go to a different place….hosptial, urgent care center, etc.

Q: How should I treat my foot pain?
A year ago I broke my fifth metatarsal and was placed in a cast. The bone healed, yet I am still suffering pain which is worse at some times than others. I figure this is just something I’m going to have to live with, but I need some advice on how to deal with it. Specifically, should I use heat or ice to alleviate the pain? Should I be exercising the foot to build up muscles or should I be resting it?

A: I would recommend taking something like Tylenol to help with some of the pain (an example only) as well as heat and also rest the foot, but I would recommend checking with your doctor first to see what they say.

I would also recommend a consultation with a Podiatrist (a doctor that diagnoses and treats diseases, disorders, and conditions that relate to the foot and ankle) if you haven’t already to see what they say.

Q: I have foot pain from running in a 5k race. Has anyone had the same symptoms and if so what is the treatment?
I have been running for one year consistently (with no pain). I am 25 yrs old (190 lbs). Three weeks ago I ran in a 5k race. In the 5k, I ran normal until the end of the race. At the end I sprinted as fast as I could for ¼ of a mile. Once the race was over I felt good with no pain. At home, I took my shoes off, took 10 steps and began to feel pain only in my right foot (on the back outside not on the ball) every step I took. I thought I pulled a muscle and didn’t think much about it. After limping two weeks and taking an entire bottle of ibuprofen, I began to feel better and was able to walk without a limp and not noticeable pain. After the two weeks I also played some tennis and with hardly any pain. Today (3 weeks later) I decided to run again (2 miles). Halfway through the run (1 mile) I felt the pain again. My foot again is very tender. Do I need new shoes? Is this Plantar Fasciitis. What about flat feet? Should I see a doctor? Will it ever go away? Please help.

A: You should definitely go see your nearest podiatrist for an evaluation and get x-rays to make sure nothing is broken. It could be a stress fracture or it could be tendonitis. Judging from where it is like the back of the foot (maybe near the ankle), it’s more likely tendonitis. You need to rest it again, ice, and Advil. New shoes will help a little, but go see a podiatrist to get evaluated. You may need some orthotics to help with your running so that area doesn’t get stressed or overused. He/she will watch you walk and see how you function, this will determine what type of orthotic and other treatments are necessary. Once it’s determined what is causing your pain, then yes, it’ll go away. Plantar fasciitis is more on the bottom of your foot near the heel bone or in the arch.

Q: foot pain that travels to my calf when I walk?
Hi can anyone tell me when I walk just a block or more my foot in the bottom arch starts to hurt then my ankle and then my calf freezes and I can hardly walk the pain is SO bad. It is just in my left foot and ankle and calf. I love to walk and now I can’t.
Thanks for reading this and anyone else with this experience please feel free to write. Would appreciate it!

A: I am not if you are a man or woman. If you were heals however then that needs to stop. Planter fasciitis is what it sounds like you have. That means that the facia in your foot gets inflamed and then causes pain whenever it is agitated. You can take a tennis ball and put it under your foot in the evening and roll it back and forth, this will help stretch the muscles down there. Also massage it and use ice for 20 min in the evening. 1 hour before you go to bed. If it does not get better then you will need to have it evaluated further and possibly get some orthotics. Hope that helps.

Q: How can i relive foot pain after work?
I am on my feet all day and I am flat footed. My feet are in a great deal of pain through the end of my 8 hr shift and when i get home they really hurt. Is there any thing i can do to relive some of the pain?

A: When you are on your feet for extended periods of time, you must wear shoes that are designed with a sturdy foundation. Most shoes on the market have very little surface are actually contacting the ground. Your relief will come almost instantly with a shoe like the New Balance MW927BK, MW977GT, M587NV and MR1123MC. These are all shoe models that have total contact bottoms and very strong foundations. I can’t stress enough how they take the strain off the feet, ankles and knees. Also, put the New Balance Sport Cushion Insole inside the New Balance Shoe instead of using the factory insoles. The shoes and insoles are not cheap but they will certainly provide you with the relief you are desperately needing. Thanks and good luck!

Q: My aunt has excruciating foot pain from diabetes?
She’s tried all kinds of creams & lotions and does ice packs at night. I’ve caught her standing barefoot in the snow before. Is there something that can really alleviate the foot pain for her?
I should add that her and the doctor ARE working on medical relief, pain killers and such. I’m looking for alternative routes ON TOP of doctor care

A: Do NOT try to mix and match home remedies with what professionals prescribe.
At best it doesn’t work, at worst it will cause all kinds of complications and make matter worse.

She should be EXTREMELY careful walking barefoot, especially in snow or hot sand, as she will be unable to feel the onset of frostbite and burns (as well as other injuries).

Accupuncture might bring some relief and doesn’t generally upset the chemical balance of the body, but do NOT engage in it without consulting with her doctors first.
