Q: Searing nerve pain in knee cap and at joint of foot and leg from groin strain?
I foolishly tried to run off a groin strain , which only made things worse . I now have sporadic nerve pain at foot and leg joint , kneecap and groin . The constant rotation of sharp pain is getting me down .Can anyone help?

A: You may have injured one of the nerves supplying your leg & foot. You should stop exercising & see a PT (Physical Therapist), CNP (Certified Nurse Practitioner), or your doctor for proper care.

In the meantime, moist heat + gentle massage can help healing & temporarily relieve pain. It will require time for that nerve to heal.

Q: SI Joint Pain, Pinched Nerve, and Roller Coasters?
I have been in physical therapy for SI joint pain and a pinched nerve in my back. It still hurts most of the time (even sitting down) despite the therapy and medication I’ve been taking (though the two things are slowly helping me improve).

My family is going to Six Flags this Friday and I was wondering if it would be a bad idea for me to ride things. Could I do worse damage to my back? Thanks in advance.
I meant to ask this before, can I ride anything in the park?

A: While I love roller coasters, I have to say that yes, it would be a bad idea for you to ride them right now.

Many roller coasters are quite rough, and it sounds like you are already in enough pain. Being jostled and stiffening up is most certainly NOT going to help your pinched nerve or joint pain.

In fact, I believe that most roller coasters have warnings against riding them if you have a back injury.

Either way, I’d avoid the roller coasters this time. When you’ve recovered and feel strong, you can consider riding roller coasters again. I’m not even sure you would enjoy the rides at this time!

Q: Why i am experiencing joint pain?
I am 21 years old, and recently i’ve been experiencing intense joint and nerve pain, only on the left side of my body. i have difficulty rotating my shoulder, bending my elbow, knee and wrist, and it hurts when moving all of them. I also have sharp pain in my left hip area, almost like sciatic nerve pain, that goes from my lower back down to my left thigh. I noticed it about 2 months ago and just gets worse, my wrist and the strange “nerve” pain are getting so bad it’s hard for me to go to work without wanting to leave. I don’t have health insurance or i would go to the doctor. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? and how i can help it go away?

A: i really only tink a docter can help but try this site

it gives you a complete Diagnosis
hope i helped :) :)

Q: Hip pain, Joint or Nerve?
I have been practicing Tae Kwon Do for 2 years, and recently i seem to have been having pain in my hip. I feels like it is deep in my hip. Its a very sharp pain. Its only when I kick. Not when I walk or sit, but when I open my legs more than 90 degree angle. Its on both sides too. I’m not sure if it is a joint problem or a nerve problem. I have been to two doctors and they both told me something different. And both suggested very expensive ways of fixing it. So my personal trainer directed me to go to a chiropractor, and after months of that, it is not helping either. I got X-rays taken that shows no break in the bones, and muscle scans that show no irregularities. I’m very afraid this could be the end of my Tae Kwon Do career. Can anyone help me?

A: Its a dislocation of your hip bone. Take your x-ray and check the two pelvic bones whether they are level (take a ruler and place on top of the pelvic bone). I have so many patients with such problem. Chinese spine manupulator have a skill to realign the hip bone in minutes, no need surgery.

As there are many nerves coming out through the pelvic bone, when there is mis alignment, these nerves were pulled very tightly.

Q: did an antidepressant cure my chronic pain?
I have had chronic neck pain for about 6 months, and nothing has really gotten rid of it. But i’ve recently been placed on lexapro for a slight bought of depression and it seems that I after a almost 2 weeks of being on lexapro my neck pain is completely gone! Is it possible the lexapro has cured the pain? i’ve had MRIs and there are no obvious injury, my doctor said just some nerve pain or joint inflammation.

A: Perhaps it is a sign that relaxing can aid your symptoms. I have had trouble with chronic neck pain for years, as a result of a car accident. I would suggest chiropractic, physiotherapy treatment to examine and treat your symptoms; it worked for me. Perhaps your posture is causing the problem with your neck and a physio can suggest some exercises for you too, as well as massage. I am not sure if it is a good idea to take medication for depression if your symptoms can be better managed with proper treatment. Constant pain would only lead to depression so I would suggest ask your doctor for a referral for treatment rather than just rely on the pills permanently.

Q: spot of skin pain…no other symptoms?????
ok, so it is about 1-2in. on the surface of the skin and have had it for about 6 months on the back of the thigh. Feels like a burn, I can pin point the spot. No redness or visible signs of problem. Have had occasional sciatic nerve pain and joint pain.

A: Sciatica can cause this skin tenderness.

Q: Seems like all the sudden I have joint pain &swelling ,?
First my right wrist, for no good reason swelled & became very painful.I used a wrist support brace, helped. Then after working down on one knee that swelled was sore and clicked when I walked a few weeks later , all I did was cross my left leg over my right knee, then a few minutes later It swelled so bad I could not bend it for a couple days. Used crutches took advil, allseemed getting better.Wait, limped on right foot two months because of right knee, now 2nd toe on right foot swollen, wont go down two months.Throughout toe misery, favored left foot. Now left ankle sore [only during use]stand or walk on left ankle intense “nerve pinching pain”.Now after moderate use both right wrist &right knee back to moderate swelling and soreness, left ankle -screaming pain,My biggest question is the possibilty I have developed a debilitating chronic joint disease,or may bone cancer or ?Please truthfully tell me I have only slight age related [40’s}osteo or some temp strain I will be so happy If you can!

A: A doctor better examine you and you should do blood test before we can say anything. If tests where normal then it is likely that you have an overall body weakness. ALL your muscles are very weak and you should strengthen them. By strengthening your muscles the pressure would be on the on the muscle and not the joint! Another reasons could be of over weigth. You haven’t mentioned it thought but if you are over weighted then you should control your diet. Again, I don’t tell you to starve coz you don’t wannu burn muscles too.

In conclusion, I think you should consult and always be in touch with a ‘physiotherapist’ (of course after you saw a doctor I mentioned above) to show you the proper exercises so that you can strengthen your muscles.

Q: Can an engagement ring cause hand/nerve pain?
Help! I am recently engaged and love my engagement ring. Only problem is, since I have been wearing it, I have experienced hand pain – specifically, stiffness in my ring finger in the first joint, stiffness in thumb, and soreness down my forearm on the outer side. My ring is total 1.5 carat weight probably, and my hand is very small (size 4 finger). Has anyone else had this problem?

A: I don’t think it’s your ring unless it’s to tight and the blood can’t flow through properly. What kind of work do you do?? I would get it checked by the Dr.

Q: Is it possible to have permanent pain after only 3 chemo treatments?
I had stage 1 Ovarian Cancer last summer. It was removed and fully contained, no spreading. Opted to have elective chemo for prevention. Only had 3 treatments, however the 2 meds I were given had side effects of pain and hair loss. When I go for my checkups the doctor says “it is not from the chemo”. But I KNOW that I did NOT feel like this BEFORE the chemo. It is deep nerve and joint pain all over my body. Possibly Fibromyalgia? My one elbow has horrible tendinitis and the lower arm, wrist and hand of the side I use are affected. Almost like carpal tunnel, but I don’t work and other than being on the computer for fun, don’t use my wrists excessively? PLEASE RESPOND, thankyou :)

A: As you have had ovarian cancer, I feel it is safe to assume you have now artificially reached early menopause.

Because of this you will no longer be producing certain hormones.

This can lead to some arthritic like pain that usually manifests itself later.

Try discussing it from this angle with your Dr. It is not a direct side effect of the chemo, but could be an indirect one from your combined cancer and treatments.

Q: Suffering Body Pain. Maybe D.E.S. drug has caused my structural deformaties resulting in my nerve damage?
All my life my legs have caused me moderate to severe pain… I also have a lot of back pain from scholiosis in 2 sharp directions between my shoulderblades and spinalesthesiosis in my first vertabrae in my lumbar. My first debilitating episode was at 19 y.o. working as a carpenter I suffered numbness and lack of muscle control in my hands with severe shoulder pain…. looks like carpal tunnel eh? Well, I have another suspect stemming from my shoulders. They are both somewhat misformed as they become disjointed once over my head….. almosts like the socket is flat and slides all over the joint. I feel sharp nerve pain there and suspect THAT is a primary area to look for a possible correction.
I have had 2 EMG’s, both calling for carpal tunnel surgery due to moderate to severe nerve damage.
I have expressed my concerns to both Neurologists yet neither seem to acknowlege any thoughts that my problem could stem beyond my wrists.
Does this seem right to you? Please Help.
I have never been on any medication prior to 2005 when I started and continue 150mg/day Sertraline ( generic for Zoloft) and then I started taking LYRICA for the pain and am currently taking 150 mg / day. The Lyrica has definately improved my ability to perform daily functions which were previously impossilble at times.

A: Do you take any medication for cholesterol, like Lipitor, or Zocor which are statins? These can cause muscle weakness, joint pain, & neurological damage. See www.spacedoc and other websites on the side effects of statins.

Q: Left side nerve pain. Which lack of vitamin is causing this?
Have a rare pain in 4 points: along the finger ring, elbow and some times shoulder. And in the leg – hip joint.

It is in the nerves and all doctor says I have nothing but it´s incrementing.
(I year ago started).

Ideas?

A: I have no idea what condition you may have but it might be beneficial to take vitamin B12 as this does help with the health of nerve cells. The best to you.

Q: Natural supplements for chronic pain and fatigue?
I have done a lot of research on supplements, but would like some input from people who have taken them and found them helpful. Especially if they were successful in reducing muscle, joint, and nerve pain!

My boyfriend has a rare condition called Elhers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) type 3 which causes his joints to be loose and dislocate easily. His skin is extremely soft and stretchy and is often bruised or irritated with hives showing up at even gentle contact.

His main concern is the pain and fatigue and he has had little relief from it despite pain killers. His arthritic type of pain led him to try the following supplements:chondroitin, glucosamine, and Sam-e, but they did not help.

What supplements/herbs/remedies may help him? Please include whether you tried them or know someone who has, and also the type taken. Thanks!

A: My mother swore by a mixture of crushed garlic and honey for arthritic pains and it worked for her. worth a try?
I have no personal experience with the poor man’s other symptoms though.

Q: Are there any natural pain killers for nerve pain?
I have severe nerve pain caused by a brain herniation at the base of my skull that I am told may be too risky to operate on due to its exact location and other issues with my health. These nerve pains come in ‘episodes,’ short periods of time (short meaning as little as ten minutes) or longer periods of time (the longest period of time was a full week when I could barely get up out of bed and was unable to lift anything or really move much at all (I couldn’t even eat…I had to drink very slowly through a straw because my throat hurt so much that it would close up as I swallowed and choke me if I was not very careful). I am on Vicodin and am very worried that I may become addicted to it, as it is very addictive and lately I am finding myself using the Vicodin every day at least once (this last weekend, I had to take five of the pills within a three day period just to be able to function on a semi-normality. I have also been on Oxycodone in the past, but was switched to Vicodin as it is not as addictive, though still very addictive.

I would like to cut back on the amount of vicodin I use as much as possible, but if I don’t take the Vicodin, then I cannot function enough to do anything at all, really. Are there any natural herbs or alternative medicines or therapies that might help me? I have had physical therapy in the past, and it did not help at all, even making the pain worse on some days…I am just so worried that I am becoming addicted to Vicodin.

My symptoms include numbing of the hands and feet, severe pain in the joints and muscles, especially the jaw, back, and knees, fatigue, and depression. I would be happy with anything that can help me even just a little…it would mean using the Vicodin that much less, even if it’s only one day less a week or something.

Anyone know? My doctor doesn’t know about alternative medicine and told me that the Vicodin is the best way to go if it makes it so I can function on a daily basis. I need help…I don’t want to be dependent on vicodin all my life.

I am only 24 and I am so worried of the long term effects of being on Vicodin.

Plese forgive if this question doesn’t make much sense. I am on Vicodin currently, and feeling a little light-headed and having trouble thinking today, so I don’t know if I’m making sense, but I want to ask about it now, while I am still able to think at all without pain.

Any suggestions or ideas?

A: Hi Jewel,

I’m sorry that you’re in so much pain. My problems are somewhat different to yours – I have a disease called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) – but I too suffer from very severe neuropathic pain. I also get bad muscle and joint pain because of spasticity and contractures respectively. For my condition, a multidisciplinary approach is the best one.

If the oxycodone was helping your pain, it would be worthwhile talking to your doctor about Oxycontin. This is a controlled release form of oxycodone, usually taken twice a day. It releases the drug into your body much more slowly and gives much more steady pain relief than taking immediate release oxycodone tablets. Addiction should not be a problem in a well managed patient taking Oxycontin for severe chronic pain. Your body will develop a physical dependence over time and you would go through withdrawal were you to stop taking it suddenly but again this shouldn’t be an issue in someone taking it for chronic pain. As long as your dose is tapered slowly and carefully when the time comes for you to stop taking it, you shouldn’t have any problems.

However, opioids as a general rule are less effective against neuropathic pain than other types of pain. It would be worth asking your doctor about Lyrica (pregabalin). Lyrica is actually used mainly to treat epilepsy, but its value in treating neuropathic pain is well established. Other anti-convulsant and certain anti-depressant drugs are also useful and can mean a reduced dose of opioid or even no opioid at all is necessary.

My pain does not respond particularly well to medications, but I need them to take the edge off and make it possible for me to function. I have found that combination therapy is best for mine.I take oxycodone (both Oxycontin and immediate release when I have breakthrough pain), topiramate (an anti-convulsant) and meloxicam (an anti-inflammatory).

Are you seeing a pain management specialist? It’s well worth asking for a referral to one if you’re not already dealing with one. I’d also recommend a pain psychologist – they can give you an outlet to deal with your frustrations, but also help teach you various techniques and strategies to manage your pain.

I hope that gives you something to go on. You’re more than welcome to email me if you’ve any questions, or even if you’d just like to talk at any stage. I’m the same age as you and I know what hell it is to live in chronic pain, especially at our age.

Take care, and I hope you find something that works for you.

Q: How do i alleviate nerve pain in my lower body and how am i causing it??
A while back I had sever sharp pain in my lower back that a specialist told me was due to my Illia joint being tilted and pinching the nerve. I had a child and the illia nerve pain seems to have eased up (maybe my joints were loosened up). NOW, i just did something and have had nerve pain in my inner thigh from my sciatic nerve for over 2 weeks. How is this happening and how can I prevent it?? Also i used to go to a chiropracter and that gave me relief BUT insurance doesn’t cover it and it is too expensive to go the 2 times a week that it takes to relieve the pain. Any ideas to alleviate the pain?
when i had all the pain with the Illia nerve i was seeing a physical therapist thru my Dr’s office BUT i would leave there in so much pain and sometimes not even able to walk. I tried that for 3-4 weeks and the stretched they gave me helped but the therapy sessions only left me in more sever pain.

A: Both iliac and sciatic nerve pain are difficult to treat. You may have had some trauma to your iliac /sciatic nerves sometime in the past. Part of the cause can be muscle swelling, pushing on the nerves and causing pain. Part of it is direct pressure on the nerve or trauma to the nerve.
The best therapy I have found for that kind of pain is aquatherapy, where you do a series of gentle stretches in a warm pool(preferably about 86 degrees). Sometimes on the ground PT is too much for the effected areas- sounds like you have that issue.
It takes time to get rid of the pain- and sometimes, it stays with you and flares up now and again.
Good luck

Q: Extreme pain after contrast injection to shoulder joint?
I had a contrast injection into my shoulder joint before my MRI, now hours later I can’t move my arm (shoulder) without a sort of shocking pain (like nerve pain I’m assuming) and it brings tears to my eyes and takes my breath away. Now when he did this injection he had a very hard time getting the dye to flow thus injecting and re injecting the needle and moving it in circular motion after thinking it’s in correct. Is this normal because I fail to believe it otherwise he’d have sent me home with some sort of pain med. please advise, anyone…please!!

A: I had the same thing done for an MRI & never any answers;; they just ‘got rid of me” & said the MRI that they got was “good enough”, in spite of the fact that I was not put in long enough to get any “picture”;; they messed up, got it in the wrong place, my muscle..so, of course being very young & naive, I let it go;; my arm ballooned up just about 1/2 hr later & i got responses that it shouldn’t have been injected into the muscle, to I had an allergic response to the contrast;; still don’t know, but it took me a good 4-5 days to resolve, & it was in my upper arm (healthy upper arm);; I feel for you, but contact the doc who ordered this MRI & tell him what happened, you may need to be ready to take another, but @ another location;; IF I woulda known better @ the time, that’s what I would have asked for..good luck, take your pain meds for now & try to move the shoulder gently (pain-free) if ya can…
