Q: How can I help relieve my leg pain after a herniated disk surgery?
My husband just had surgery on his L4 for a herniated disk. He is still in a lot of pain…mainly his left leg muscles. We go back tomorrow for the MRI after the surgery…but I’m afraid it’s just inflammation….what can I do for him tonight and for the weeks to come to help relieve the pain if it is not nerve damage?

A: Get a prescription for physical therapy immediately.!!!!!!!!
Give him a massage you can drain some of the inflammation.;Aleve or Advil Vit C 3000mg (acts as anti-inflammatory. Zinc50mg for healing after surgery.

Put either heat or cold whichever feels better.

Good luck to both of you.

Q: Why does my leg pain me sometimes in the middle of the night?
Usually I sleep like a rock until morning. But sometimes I wake up in the night and my right leg really hurts. If I move it at all, it feels like the muscles stretched out to maximum capacity, and I’m flooded with pain! I usually have to wait for this feeling to go away and by then I’m sweating a lot because of the pain, but soon I’m back in dream land.

What’s going on?

A: What you are experiencing is normally called A Charley horse. ‘Charley-horses’ is the first place your body targets when you are dehydrated. Drink lots of water! I recommend purified water and Mineral Water mixed 50/50. The Mineral Water is going to put back into the muscles the minerals they are losing on a daily basis. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration.

I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body.

In the evening take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. Afterwards, if you have something shaped like a cylinder and made out of hard material (think of a large rolling pin you would use for pizza dough or something) place it under your leg and push down and roll it back and forth…this should massage the spasms out of your leg. It will hurt while you’re doing it, but more so the type of pain that actually feels good, in the long run. Afterwards massage an analgesic cream into the area. You will start feeling better very quickly.

Take 500mg of calcium and magnesium every evening. This will help stop the cramping.

Q: What type of doctor do I see for upper leg pain that goes to my knee?
The pain goes from right below my butt to my knee. It is mostly on the side and back of my left leg, and the back of my knee also hurts. It hurts more when I am sitting down. What type of doctor should I see?

A: You should first see you family physician. They’ll be able to direct you to the right specialist if needed.

Q: I have leg pain and possible Leiden V Factor, should I go to the hospital?
I’ve been having horrible pains in the outside of my left leg. It’s a small area where the pain is localized and my leg starts to go numb. My uncle died from complications associated with Leiden V Factor (which is a blood clotting disorder) but I’ve never been tested for it. Should I go to the hospital to see if its a clot or am I being dramatic?

A: symptoms of a blood clot

# Swelling
# Gradual onset of pain
# Redness
# Warm to touch
# Worsening leg pain when bending the foot
# Leg cramps, especially at night
# Bluish or whitish discoloration of skin

I would go if I were you, even if you are wrong you are safer if you go. I hope that you are wrong and its nothing, good luck.

Q: What is the best way to deal with leg pain?

Q: What can i do to Reduce broken leg pain when moving around?
if i gotta get up for something, when i lower my leg off my bed, it begins to hurt at a 2 or even a 3 (on a scale of 1-10 10 being the most pain), it may be blood rushing into it but i dont know, incase you are a medical expert, i have a broken fibula, tibula, and ankle (wouldnt know what those ibula things were if it werent for the Xrays) what can i do to prevent or reduce this pain?
oh, its almost been a week since the break and the operation, it went very well, not that im braggin, but when it did happen, i didnt think it was broken, because i hear that havin a broken bone is so painful you cant even talk, you would be too busy screaming, but i didnt even scream, i was more like “aghhh! damn! Oowww! oh sh*t!” so it probably wasnt a severe break, although the xray of it sure did look pretty bad, especially the larger bone below the knee, what hurts actually is my ankle, which i didnt see much of a problem with (i dont know what it would look like normally anyway) after i was at the hospital, i was put out and they put it back in place, i spent the night and half of the day there, friday i was home, pain reduced bigtime day by day, mostly pain was in my ankle, didnt even notice pain in the other spots, now i even have periods of no pain at all sometime. but when i get up, i get pain, moving it down slowly helps slightly but hurts to hold the cast up with my leg

A: I’ve had a very similar experience – I broke my tibula and fibia, and dislocated the ankle. I was first sent home in plaster, which came off after two weeks (when I got my stitches taken out), and then placed in a fibre glass cast. The old plaster casts are so heavy!

In the plaster cast, I had the same sensation as you. It felt like the blood was rushing down, and that my leg was being pulled through the ground. Obviously, when you lower your leg, more blood is going to run there, and if there is an injury, there will be swelling.

Basically, I had to spend as much time as possible off my feet to help with the healing and reduce the swelling. So that is my first advice, though not always practical. When I had to go out in public, I had a wheelchair which had a leg support on it. That helped to relieve the pressure. The other advice I have is to take ibrofuen. I found this helped a little.

Really, the only thing that makes it go away is time. It is all part of that you have done some major damage to your leg, and it is trying to heal.

For after you are healed, I recommend that you buy a heat pack (I have a wheat bag, which I heat up in the microwave). It will help when your joints are sore, and it will also help you through physiotherapy.

Q: Why am i not exhaust but leg pain while doing skipping rope?
I’ve been doing skipping rope all the time as my home cardio workout but i’ve also been inconsistent all the time also. Yesterday, i started doing skipping rope since i haven’t done it for so long. But the problem remains there , that is my leg muscle pain easily while i’m not exhaust and my heart ain’t beating very fast like what i’ve gone through with running.
My leg muscles are quite massive , but i figured out whether is it that my leg is fat.

A: Could be a couple of things. Chances are you are feeling a burning sensation in your leg? This is lactic acid building up, which is a good sign as growth hormone is elevated when this happens. Growth hormone will burn a lot of fat.

You need to build up a tolerance and let your leg muscles adapt to the training. In order to work out longer and work your heart more you should do intervals.

Try skipping for 30 seconds at a fast pace. Then take a break for 30-60 seconds and walk around the room. Then do another 30 seconds of skipping sprints, followed the the active rest period.

Do around 8 sprints if you can and feel free to toggle the work and rest periods.

Q: What are common causes for leg pain?
I’ve had unexplainable leg pain in my left leg for the past two days. It comes and goes, but when it hurts, it’s pretty severe pain. It starts out at the back of my leg and eventually works itself all the way down to my foot. It not cramps. Any idea what this could be?

A: im not a doctor but somedays i too get some leg pain but i do stand up for around 12 hours a day with hardly any rest.

Could this be attrtibuted to your job?

Q: I wake from sleep with leg pain is the arthiritis or trapped nerve?
I do have a bulging disc in my neck which causes chronic pain. One consultant said i may have a disc further down causing leg pain but the other consutant said we won’t bother with a scan it will just be arthiritis in your legs. Oppinions please?

A: It sounds like
!. YOU need a different DR
2. the LOWER disk is causing the problem in your legs. Your neck disk would cause symptoms in your shoulders, head and arms

Since you said that you did have a bulging disk = there ya go! Did they happen to say this?

3. “The other consultant” is an idiot! (lol)

The only way to tell is to go to a different physician – Orthopedic possibly, and get an MRI

That scan holds the answers!! the sooner the better!

I looked at one of your other questions and You know- The syndrome that you speak of could be causing this too. and being overweight. adding more pressure!
msg me – I will talk to you!

Q: What are possible causes for my lower back and leg pain?
I’m 22 and since about a year ago, I’ve been having lower back pain that’s been getting worst. I don’t do sports and there was no injury to the area. It comes and goes but it’s causing me more pain now and the pain is also in my legs. The pain is worst when I lie down at night and its a sharp pain radiating to a dull pain. The leg pain feels like nerve pain and it’s been making my legs very weak and I have trouble walking at times. I also get this weird tingling sensation in my lower body and it makes my legs weak and knees buckle. I’ve been to several doctors and they told me it was muscle pain at first, told me to exercise, and gave me anti-inflammatory meds. None of that worked, and they are having xrays dones and my CT scan is schedule for monday. I’m pretty nervous, and the doctory said she does not know what it is without the test results and does not know what the problem could be. Anyone have similar experiences and can tell me what it was or any ideas what it could be?
Will CT scans always be helpful to find out problems relating to my back pain? Seems like some of you think that I should not be getting a CT scan. What is the worst possible problem that could be causing my pain? I just want to be prepared. I don’t do any lifting or heavy exercise, so the slipped disc thing seems weird… Does it just happen?

A: it could be a pinched nerve caused by a herniated disk.

Q: Has anyone suffered from severe leg pain in both legs especially at night?
For a week now I have suffered severe leg pain in both legs especially at night. It is so painful it hurts to walk.My hubby was just laid off therefore we lost our med insurs, and I`m trying to avoid the doc if at all possible, any ideas?

A: Try a warm to hot bath at night before you go to bed. Take a pain reliever at bedtime; Tylenol, Motrin, Alleve. If it’s Motrin or Alleve be sure to take with food or milk.
You can try heating pad on your legs in the evening before bed while watching TV.
Take care.

Q: can scoliosis cause leg pain similair to that of a puled hamstring?
can scoliosis touch a nerve on the top of a leg, and cause pain similair to that of a pulled hamstring?Because, I have back pain due to scoliosis mainly in the lower left back, and it’s my left leg i can’t stretch. thanks in advance.

A: I believe that they are all interconnected. I have been studying the muscles and tendons, the overlooked parts of the body. All our pain comes from pinched nerves or muscles, yet we have all kinds of relievers for them. When tendons are shortened, I use the turtle head as an analogy, that they can go in and out, that they pull on everything they are connected to and cause pain that way. Now if you have a shortened tendon from your leg into your back, it’s going to pull your back that way, giving you what they call scoliosis. Let’s do your knees first. These are simple, you can’t mess anything up if done wrong and they can be done over and over if needed without getting an overdose.
Knees. Sitting in a chair, place feet flat on the floor. Wrap your hands around your leg right above the knee. With your finger tips, find the tendons in the back of it, two on the inside and two on the outside, one of them part way up the outside of your leg. Place a finger on each of them and then pull up hard and hold. Now relax, take a deep breath and exhale, and don’t tense up any part of your body, including your arms, let your hands and fingers do the work. Wait 45 seconds and then very slowly start to slide your leg out from the chair until it’s fully extended. Then release the pressure and let your leg rest there for one minute.
For your back, and now I’m going to have to say that for some of this I am giving it my best shot, for I don’t know where all the tendons are as of yet, but they do keep to the inside of the body so I am hoping that is the case here.
Lay on your bed and pull your legs up most of the way with your feet resting on the bed. Take your hands and go down to your crotch and feel the tendons running from your body to your legs. It’s press on at least one of them or more if you can and hold firm pressure on it. Relax again. After 30 seconds very slowly let your leg start falling to the outside until it’s fallen all the way open. Release and let it rest one minute. There are several tendons down there so it can take a few minutes, but that isn’t much compared to a lifetime of hell. Sometimes you may even find one that is sore just because it’s had all the pressure on it and that is the main one to release. I hope you find some relief in this. If any questions or problems, email me.
