Q: Cause/cure for nighttime diarrhea?
For the last 12 days, I’ve had diarrhea. It started out all day/night and has now subsides you could say. Now, it’s occuring only overnight. I am awaken with diarrhea 3-4x/night then once I am awake for the day around 4:30, I have another 1-2 loose movements then just cramping during the day. Stool sample was negative. No other symptoms. Any idea of the cause? Cure?
A: Twice a day, sprinkle 3 ground-up horse laxative pills blended with 2 apricots, minced basil, a few slices of Colby Jack Cheese, and a tablespoon of Pepto-Bismol. However, an alternate method is to stop touching yourself. God is punishing you for masturbating. Shame on you.
Q: Monthly nighttime diarrhea/cramps?
About once a month, I am woken up at night feeling an urgent bowl movement coming on. I unleash a watery diarrhea, have some almost unbearable cramps, have a little more diarrhea, and then seem to be done in about 20 minutes. I’ve tried to find correlation between many factors and these diarrhea attacks but to no avail Im nervous because my mom has ulcerative colitis bad and I dont want to end up like her. PS my diet is pretty bad, I’m not gonna lie. Lots of carbs/protein, not many veggies and fruits.
A: Is there any kind of relation to your period?
If there is, it could be your uterus cells have started growing in your intestines, and your suffering from endometritis. If it is related to your period, send me an email and we can talk about it
Q: Why does my puppy have diarrhea at night?
She has normal #2’s during the day, but come nighttime she wakes me several times a night to have watery, horribly smelly diarrhea. She eats the same later at night as in the morning and the daytime. Help?
A: Hi,
If diarrhea is the only symptom and it goes away within a day or two, it’s likely that your dog simply ate something he shouldn’t have. If the diarrhea persists, call your vet; it could the sign of a more serious problem. Here’s more info:

Q: Probable cause for severe diarrhea in elderly?
i have a 95 year old (dearly loved) patient. She’s a happy, upbeat lady, but has been having watery stools (especially during the nighttime) that has all of her caregivers concerned. Her stool samples came back negative for hidden blood, bacteria or parasites. She still has an appetite, no pain, no bloating, no nausea, no fever. Not diabetic, but positive for UTI caused by E. Coli in urine only.
Anybody has a clue?
A: maybe it’s kidney damage? Not enough water reabsorption .
Q: Cause of my morning diarrhea?
For the past 3 days, every time I wake up in the morning, I get diarrhea. It’s not really fluid coming out of me, mostly it’s wet farts and small turds. Every time a turd has to come out, I feel extremely nauseous and sick, but once it passes, I feel fine. It seems sort of long to be food poisoning, but you never know (since I moved to college 2-1/2 weeks ago and am eating the cafeteria food). Could it be the water? But I don’t drink out of the sink, I either use fountains or purified water on campus. Throughout the day I pretty much feel fine, and I don’t eat until nighttime when I get hungry. At night, I’ve just been having bread. Sorry for the terminology but thank you for your answers.
A: Maybe it’s the cheeseburger you asked for in r&s.
Q: My 15 month old son has had diarrhea for almost 2 weeks now! Any suggestions or ideas to help?
It began 2 weeks ago and it was not too bad, but a little bit would get onto his clothes at daycare. Then the “stinky burps” that smelled like vomit started. He didn’t actually vomit, though. And then the diaper rash came and it was horribly intense. Along with that came the massive nighttime blowouts that caused us to have to bathe him immediately in the mornings and do loads of laundry. He has had low grade fevers on and off, the highest going to 100.8 degrees. Now, the diaper rash is gone because he has stopped wanting to eat (we had him on the BRAT/bland diet and he liked that food) and so he now doesn’t have ANY dirty diapers until his big blowout at night. He cannot drink cows milk and we had him on soy, but after a week of the diarrhea, we changed him to rice milk and took out the soy yogurt from his diet. That was about when the rash started to get better (also because we had a prescription burn cream for him). However, this morning we went to get him and he had not only pooped everywhere, but he also had vomited in his crib, and he had nasty green snot coming from his nose. After his bath, he took his bottle of rice milk and then 10 minutes later had a huge watery diarrhea diaper (the slimy kind) which I haven’t seen from him since last week. I am now getting those stinky burps and getting congestion. Having been to the pediatrician once and having called them several times in between, we don’t know what else to do, especially if this is a virus. Could it be teething? I have just never heard of it being THIS bad! And now I feel bad too. But I’m worried about my son losing weight and/or getting dehydrated. We gave him pedialyte for a few days, but since he wasn’t vomiting, we stopped. Also, if the food we are giving him is causing this. We have also taken samples of his stool to a lab, just to make sure (since it has lasted SO long). If you have experienced anything like this, or you might have an idea that I haven’t thought of, your help is much appreciated. Thank you!
I have taken him to the doctor once already and have an appt. today also. I think I am going to have to really put my foot down, now that I have seen that it is not getting better.
A: This doesn’t sound normal and I would advise to seek medical help – something isn’t right inside and needs to be investigated. I wouldn’t say it is teething but I would give him some rehydration sachets that you get from the chemist to restore valuable salts lost from the body.
Q: Stomach Problems that WONT go away!!!?
So I’m a younger guy whose been having these stomach problems for the past couple years. Basically I’ll get overcome with nausea at nighttime, which then leads to diarrhea and the shakes. The next few days after that I’ll have no appetite and still feel like I want to throw up but don’t. I’m on anti-anxiety meds that my doctor prescribed but was wondering if anybody else has these types of problems and whether or not they have any advice. Much appreciated!!!
A: have you ever been checked for irratable bowel syndrome that sounds like it please have it checked if its well you will know and get meds for it and if its not then thats one you can mark off your list.
Q: Worried about Biaxin side effects, help?
My daughter has been put on 500 mgs of Biaxin twice a day for a sore throat/cough.The side effects of throwing up and diarrhea are making her feel worse. The pharmacist told her that this is very common with this drug. Do you think it would be ok for her to take only one pill a day?The nighttime pill makes her very sick.Thanks.
A: Please don’t listen to anyone on this site when it comes to your health.Go to the doctor. Only he can tell you what she needs.
I agree with Dasher.
Q: Do I have food poisoning?
On Tuesday night, I went to Cracker Barrel and ate food there. A few hours later, I had a horrible stomach ache and diarrhea. I came in and out of the bathroom all night. On Wednesday, I felt sick again, but not as bad but with nausea. I only felt this way after I ate something or at nighttime. I haven’t thrown up at all, but I sometimes get dry mouth. Today, I feel nauseous and my stomach doesn’t feel much better. Should I be concerned?
A: “Food poisoning” rarely leads to something more serious. If bacteria is causing your symptoms, it’s eventually eliminated from the system. As long as you’re not vomiting and the diarrhea is well under control, you should be fine. Stick to mainly liquids for the next day or so — broth, consomme, water. Dry toast and crackers are fine as are jello and rice pudding. No fruit juice, soda or milk for now. If you feel fine 2 days from now, reintroduce your usual foods back into your diet.
Q: My dog is vomiting what looks and smells like feces?
He’s done this maybe 4 times in the past three days in what seems like a random pattern (he’s done it at 3 in the morning, midday, and nighttime). I honestly would’ve mistaken it for diarrhea if I hadn’t seen it come out of his mouth. It’s a Sunday so I can’t call my vet about it.. I already bought new food (Hill’s Science Diet for puppies) because I’m thinking his old food (which was a bulk generic food from Costco – I know) might be getting him sick. I’m worried that it might be an intestinal obstruction or something because he only pooped once all day and it was very watery and had a little blood (or something else pinkish-red). Is there anything else I should be suspicious about? What can I do to make it better until I can visit the vet? If anyone is a vet or has previous experience with this, help is much, much appreciated!
Also, he’s not showing any signs of pain or discomfort at all and eats his food normally.
A: I had fed my pup the same thing (Kirkland brand from Costco) He would eat his own poop and then throw it up…….he no longer does that since I switched foods. (This food didn’t bother my other dogs)
Q: severe nausea among other problems.?
Hi, everyone. I have a severe problem that I desperately want some answers to; please only answer this question if you have medical education to back up your response or experience (personal or firsthand maybe) regarding the question.
I suffer from severe nausea (which is a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE problem for me, because I also have a very intense form of emetophobia, which is a debilitating fear of vomiting) and it occurs quite frequently. My nausea is very often associated with a headache/migraine/dizziness. I breifly told a doctor about this, and he prescribed zofran–a very powerful anti-nausea–for my problems. However, tonight I am experiencing nausea to the point where I think i may throw up (God forbid) and I have taken five zofran pills already and my nausea is so severe that I still feel like I’m going to throw up soon even after five of these very powerful pills.
My nausea occurs all the time, but it occurs at its worst in the late nighttime (right now it is 2:30 a.m. my time and i’ve been feeling sick since around midnight) or in the early morning. When my nausea occurs at nighttime, I am more likely to experience bowel problems with it (having several bowel movements in the period of two hours, gas, mild diarrhea). When it occurs in the morning, I am more likely to have a bad headache/migraine with the nausea. Whenever it occurs, it gets way worse AND i feel dizzy if I lay down or close my eyes–this instantly makes it five times worse.
I have no clue what could be causing such severe nausea so often, especially to the point where powerful medicine doesn’t help. I’ll be making myself a doctor’s appointment soon, but in the meantime, any ideas what could be causing this?
A: Nausea with migraines is very common. I always get really sick to my stomach when I have a migraine. Dizziness is pretty common too; I experience that a lot as well. However, if you are experiencing this a lot then you need to talk to your doctor about it. Have you mentioned how often you get headaches and migraines? You may need tests run, and at the very least you should be put on medication for your headaches/migraines. I get headaches and migraines a lot, but you shouldn’t be getting them so frequently.
As for the diarrhea and severe nausea…I can tell you that it is more than likely from anxiety. Your anxiety about your emetophobia is probably the cause of your nausea and diarrhea. Severe stress will cause stomach upset. You would be surprised at the problems stress and anxiety can cause. Take it from someone who knows and has been there. My stomach was messed up for years because of stress. I was sick all of the time.
Here are some tips to help with nausea and the panic you feel because of emetophobia:
-When you feel a wave of nausea, close your eyes and take small but slow breaths.
-Try to avoid that state of panic where full-blown anxiety takes over and you can’t think properly. When you get so worked up and upset it makes you feel even sicker, which makes your anxiety even worse. It’s a vicious cycle.
-Try to carry mint or ginger with you. Mint gum is great for helping nausea. I carry mint gum with me all the time to chew when my stomach is upset. You can buy ginger capsules OTC and they are also great for nausea. I find the gum helps me with anxiety whenever I suffer from a panic attack.
-Do something to take your mind off your nausea. Watch TV (something funny will help a lot…laughter is the best medicine!), play games, or read a book. If you are in public, close your eyes and visualize your “happy place” to help stay calm. If you are in something like a work environment, step outside and get some fresh air for a few minutes. Fresh air always helps.
-If you can, try to sit in front of a fan or maybe carry a mini portable fan with you. I get really hot when I feel sick and a fan helps my nausea a lot.
-Remember that you WILL be okay. Chances are you will NOT get sick. Even if you do, though (I know it’s a terrifying thought)…you will be okay. You will get through it.
As I said…it honestly sounds like anxiety to me. Anxiety can make you feel incredibly sick and cause all kind of gastrointestinal problems. Try these tips. If you still are having a lot of these problems, go back to your doctor and explain your symptoms. If the doctor blows you off or doesn’t take you seriously then find one who will.
If you need to talk (emetophobia is very difficult to deal with, after all) then feel free to e-mail me. I would be glad to listen if you need to talk, and I can recommend some great books and websites. Good luck to you, and I hope you feel better soon!!
Also…be careful to make sure you don’t take too much Zofran as that could cause you further problems. If Zofran doesn’t help then I would recommend Phenergan. Phenergan was the only thing that helped me when I suffered debilitating nausea.
Q: health problem?
well, its been a week, and I been constipated and had diarrhea. But, I ate plenty of fiber and veggies. So im no longer constipated. But I am hungry very often. I usually can withsand hunger the whole day. Why is that happening ? Why am i hungry, but it feels so powerful. my stomach starts hurting when I havent ate for 2-3 hours. When i can easily withstand 4-5 normally. My stool is also in chunks, Their not very long. and Sometimes, I still get wet stool, but I had to hold it in all day, but. I thought diarrhea symptoms and constipation clear up in a few days. I want your opinion of what this is. Not go to the doctor. Because I will if it doesnt clear up. But I want to know how severe or minimal this is. my tummy pain seems to clear up, I just get hungry, and at nighttime when sleeping when i normally dont but I do now. I can see the fiber in my stool. But I justw ant to stop the quick hungern ess.
A: Tough question. You need to be examined and have your blood checked. For the next few days, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. When you’re hungry, eat. No garbage. No sugar, white flour, soda pop, fried foods, or fast food. (I think you know all that.) Drink LOTS OF WATER. When you have to go, you HAVE TO GO!! Don’t hold your poop or pee all day! Ever! That’s a good way to get an infection that you don’t want or need! You can eat 5-7 small meals a day. Just make sure you get all your fiber, protein, carbs, fruits and veggies. You should be taking Metamucil. Actually Miralax is the best, but it costs a little more. Buy it at WalMart. Take it twice a day.
Always keep healthy granola bars and bananas on hand. Drink lots of natural juice. Have one of those right before you go to bed. Just a little something.
Bless you and Good luck!
Q: dog loose stool issue— please help!?
My 2 years old german shepherd would have loose stools at night after she eats her canned Candiae food in the evening around 430pm. Although, what makes me wonder is that she usually eats her dry food at nighttime, then in the morning her stool would be solid, compared to the loose ones she would get after eating canned food. Do you think the canned food is causing her to have diarrhea? I am really paranoid when it comes to something like that because I usually think for the worse, like what if she has a cancer or whatever. Overall, she is very healthy and she is not showing any other symptoms than diarrhea.
A: The canned food may be too rich for her by itself. Maybe mixing the two together would be a good idea to try. If she eats twice a day, feed her half dry mixed with some of the wet. See how she does on this combination. Some shepherds have sensitive stomachs and the slightest change in diet can give her the runs. I know my one GSD couldn’t have anything other then her dog food and treats or she’d have the runs in no time flat.
Q: I need advice from other parents please! My daughter is ill?
My 9 year old daughter has Constitutional Growth Delay by 2 1/2 years. In other words, she is the size of a normal 6 1/2 year old even though she is 9. She is normally quite healthy though, until last week.
8 days ago she became sick with a fever of 103 F for 2 days. Then the coughing started. It was so bad that she could hardly get any air in between the fits. There was NO other typical symptoms of a virus (sore throat, runny nose, etc.). I brought her on Monday to the doctor who said it was Bronchitis and prescribed antibiotics (Amoxicillin) and cough syrup.
The coughing was very dry at first and she had nighttime fevers on Monday and Tuesday again. Yesterday (Wednesday) the cough loosened a little bit, but now she has diarrhea and vomiting. I’m guessing that the antibiotic is causing the stomach upset. I haven’t been able to get her to eat much for about one week now. I’ve been making sure she drinks as much as she can though.
The only problem is since my daughter is naturally very petite, she has no fat reserves. She vomited again this morning (Thursday) quite profusely and I’m honestly scared. The fever is gone, but she looks like she is wasting away. Her arms and legs are so thin and she absolutely no fat around her middle. She seems normal as far as talking and understanding things, so she is active and coherent. I have her resting in bed though. I tried to convince her to at least eat a little toast, but she can’t.
The soonest I can get her to the doctor will be this evening when her father (my husband) gets home from work. Should I still give her the morning dose of antibiotic even if I think this is what is making her sick? I’m so worried that she’ll vomit again.
Does this sound like a normal virus? Should I be scared that she is so thin? What should I do to make her more comfortable for the next few hours? Please, any advice that anyone can offer will be appreciated!
A: Here’s an excerpt from a colleague’s article, I hope it helps you:
Most children who have fever might lose appetite. Don’t force the kid to eat. As long as you give your child enough to drink (water, preferably because of dental health), the child will be fine for two-three days without anything specific to eat. With any number of days above that, you might want to speak with the physician who you got the prescription from. You’ll be amazed at how kids naturally adapt the intake to fit the activity when they are sick but everything has its limits. However, you might want to give your daughter nutritional drinks.
As soon as your kid is healthy again, he’ll start to eat. Use the chance to let the child eat as much as he wants. If the child wants something to eat, don’t think there is any hysteria about what you can give him. Simply let the child get what he desires. There is no danger in spoiling a child when he is sick – as long as the child understands that normal rules are reinforced as soon as the illness is over.
If your child has fever, make the bed in cotton sheets and blankets. That is much more comfortable than satin.
Change the bed clothing often – both because of germs and for comfort.
Let the child pull a sweater over the PJ’s, and socks and slippers if he doesn’t want to stay in bed all the time.
Leave a box of Kleenex by the kid’s bedside.
If your child is nauseous, leave a bucket by the bedside so that he doesn’t need to worry about running to the toilet.
If your child throws up, help and support him. Give it dents with a strong taste and help him brush his teeth so that the bitter taste of vomit and stomach-acid disappears.
It is important that your child gets enough to drink while he is sick. The loss of fluids because of sweating, vomiting and diarrhoea has to be replaced. A child with fever needs about 100-150 ml/kg pr 24 hours. If your child has diarrhoea or is throwing up, increase the amount to 200 ml/kg per 24 hours. Encourage the child to drink as often as possible even if it should be only small sips. Give your child something to drink every half hour while he is awake.
Spoil your child and don’t feel bad about it. Just remember that as soon as the child is fine again, you have to get back to regular rules again. Let it play with toys in the bed, cover a table with plastic and let him paint. Don’t be so strict about chaos and order because you have always got time to clean it up afterwards. No matter the activity, don’t nag and don’t argue – your child doesn’t need to be organized all the time. Sit with your child. Read loud. Play games. Sing together and help the kid paint or draw. Let your child watch TV or listen to the radio. You don’t need to buy new toys only because your child is sick – but keep it in storage somewhere so that you can find it when the child is sick. Use your imagination and find things that your child will appreciate. It is of course important that your child has calm activities while he is sick. If he is feeling well enough, invite one of his friends over to play a short while.
If the child doesn’t keep the bed all the time, there is nothing wrong about letting him play outside for shorter periods of time a warm day even if he has fever. Just don’t let him overdo himself. If your child wants to stay outside longer, it is a good sign that he’s getting better. As soon as your child is getting better, you will notice an increase in the appetite and activity. When his temperature is normal both in the morning and the evening, it is safe to let him back to school and day-care. If he has had a bad blast of an infection, it might be ok to let the doctor have a look at the child before normal activities are back on the chart.
Making your own sugar- & salt solution:
Boil 7.5 fl oz water
Add:
4 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
Let it cool down
Easy foods for tender stomachs:
Watermelon pieces
Milkshake with 1 egg
Yoghurt
Apple juice with ice-slush
Oatmeal soup
Biscuits/Crackers
Call the doctor’s office and check what you should do about the amoxicillin. It isn’t favorable to abrupt a cure too soon.
I hope this is of some help for you.
All the best wishes for a speedy recovery,
R.O.
Q: 16 week old baby, teething and vomiting?
My 16 week old baby girl is teething. Her appetite is really up and down at the moment which I’ve read is common in teething babies, and so I offer water more frequently.
Today however (and also 1 day about 2 weeks back a similar thing happened), she has only had half the amount of formula she would consume in a day and during her last feed tonight drank half her bottle and about a minute later vomited a larger volume of milk than this half a bottle.
So, I have a few questions….
*Does teething cause babies to vomit?
*Why would the milk from her last feed still be in her stomach/why isn’t she digesting it?
*She doesn’t have a fever and no diarrhea, so can I rule out something else like Gastro?
*In future, if she shows little interest in milk on a given, is it OK to just persist with giving water?
*What is the best thing to do if a baby has a big vomit? Offer water?
She has had wet nappies today so she’s not dehydrated but after getting a bit of a fright from the vomit is sound asleep (nighttime here), should I wake her up every hour and offer water to replace the fluid she lost with the vomit and lack of feeding today?
If she is still a bit off tomorrow morning we will certainly be visiting the Dr!
i live in a tropical climate – it is extremely necessary to give a baby water here. she always spits up small amounts after a feed but these 2 occasions were much different, it was a really large volume of vomit….
oh and syzygy, aren’t any fluids better than no fluids?! think about it.
ask yourselves the question. if a baby is refusing milk, do you let it become dehydrated?????? no you wouldn’t. it’s cooled boiled water or an IV…. been to the hospital this morning and advised to continue on with the water. thank you for not answering my questions but giving silly advice.
A: my son vomited ALOT when he was a baby, we called a nurse and they recommended using pedialyte- seemed to work, follow the directions carefully and you have to use it within a few days i believe 72 hours or something like that
